1. When should I turn my drums and rotors?
A. Every time pads and shoes are replaced, the drums and rotors should be resurfaced. Resurfacing
not only provides a machined surface for your new brake pads or
shoes, but also trues the rotor to the hub and the drum to the axle. This
eliminates pedal pulsation and extends the life of your brakes.
2. How do I change the front wheel bearings on my front wheel drive
vehicle?
A. Front wheel drive bearings must be pressed out and in. This is done
with a hydraulic press with a pressure rating of up to 20 tons. This
pressing service is available at all five All Parts Stores. Just bring
us your front hub assembly, and we'll press your old bearing out and a new
bearing in. Prices start at $35.00.
3. What oil should I put in my car?
A. Always check manufacturer's recommendations for your vehicle.
Winchester maintains current listings on lubrication and capacities. Just
stop by or call (408)265-1356. We'll be glad to help.
4. When should I resurface my flywheel?
A.The flywheel should be resurfaced when the clutch disc is replaced.
This process provides a machined surface for the clutch disc and
eliminates any "runout", extending the clutch life. Flywheel
resurfacing is available at all Winchester locations. Winchester also
offers discounts on the purchase of a new 3 piece clutch kit when you have
your flywheel resurfaced.
5. Can you recommend a good mechanic?
A. Each All Parts Stores deals with a large number of mechanics on a
daily basis. We would be glad recommend an honest mechanic.
6. Can you test my charging starting system?
A. All five of our stores can test your charging and starting systems (on or
off your car) with on-site ignition module testing.
7. How can I be sure to pass a smog check?
A. We offer several fuel additives that lower emissions. If your
vehicle's emission components need replacing - we've got you covered. All
Parts has an extensive emissions inventory including smog pumps, oxygen
sensors, E.G.R. valves, and more. Bosch, Tomco, and Neihoff are all
in stock, and priced far below what the dealer is asking.
8. How come my belts make so much noise?
A. As belts dry out, they begin to "chirp" and
"squeal", becoming prone to breakage. (Ouch! Think of what that
could do to your components). There is a cure - new belts. Goodyear
recommends belt replacement every 40K miles. All Parts stocks Goodyear
serpentine and poly-v belts, with a lifetime guarantee.
9. What is that clicking noise when I accelerate through a turn?
A. That noise is generally the result of worn out constant velocity (CV)
joints on the axle of your front wheel drive car or minivan.
Unfortunately, the only fast and economical cure for this problem is to
replace the axle. Make sure you purchase one with an unconditional
guarantee from Winchester Auto.
10. How do I know what engine I have in my car?
A. The VIN Number is usually on the dashboard by the windshield, on
the driver's side. All Parts' competent counterpersons and our Computer
system with vehicle identification number information eliminate any
guesswork, just ask.
11. How do I dispose of used motor oil?
A. First the wrong way: don't ever pour oil on the ground, throw it in
the garbage, or pour oil (or any other car fluid) into a storm drain. The
only legal way to dispose of oil is to recycle it . In the San Jose
area, Curbside Oil Collection is available. Call (408) 277-2700 for more info.
In other areas consult your phone book for recycling centers and other
locations that accept used motor oil.
